Google Street View visit Eric Schmidt’s ship
Google Street View published photos from the Schmidt Ocean Falkor Ship in San Francisco. Eric Schmidt is the Chairman of Google. This is a state-of-the-art ocean research vessel called the Falkor, which the nonprofit Schmidt Ocean Institute own.
And this is the stunning view from the top of the ship.
But maybe we should have done like Drake… started from the bottom.
LST-4003 Kunisaki
The ship is listed as ‘LST’ or ‘Landing Ship, Tank’ but you’ll note the strong similarity to a small carrier or a carrier for an amphibious force. The Japanese Constitution forbids the construction of aircraft carriers, so this type of ship end up falling into strange categories.
Harushio class submarine
There’s also a Yushio class training submarine that is based at Kure, but the numeric probability indicates it’s an active Harushio class diesel-powered attack submarine.
SS-579 Akishio submarine
The Akishio was a Yushio class diesel-electric attack submarine. It was commissioned in March, 1986 and decommissioned in 2004. It’s 76.2 meters long and 9.9 meters in beam. It could make 20 knots submerged and carried a crew of 75.
PL-02 Esan
PL-02 Esan is a Japan Coast Guard ship. “PL” stands for ‘Patrol Craft, Large’. It’s a Shiretoko class cutter. It’s 77.8m long, is crewed by 40 sailors, can reach 20 knots, and is armed with either a 20mm or 35mm gun.
LHA-1 Tarawa
The Tarawa class of assault ships were referred to as general purpose amphibious assault ships. The ship was decommissioned in 2008 and is now waiting its fate here in Pearl Harbor.
LPH-11 New Orleans
This is an old Iwo Jima class amphibious assault ship sitting in the inactive fleet at Pearl Harbor.
