Norway gets street view images
A service just like Google Maps StreetView premiered in Norway this weekend. The name of the service is sesam.no Gatebilder. The images are for now only covering the capital of Norway, Oslo.
During summer 2008 sesam took 350.000 images using a black Volkswagen. Unlike Google Maps you can actually see the car on every panorama image if you move the camera. Very few people are visible since they deliberately choose Sunday mornings to take the panorama images. Faces are also censored.
The images are in higher quality than Google StreetView. It looks like it’s at least partly made by Mapjack. (Sesam also owns a similar search service with street view images in Sweden named hitta.se Gatubilder)
StreetView comes to Sweden!
Stadshuset in Stockholm, Sweden
A similar service to Googles StreetView has opened up in Stockholm, Sweden today named Hitta.se Gatubild (hitta means find). MapJack made the panorama images so I guess it could be available soon through their site aswell. Unfortunately I haven’t yet found a way to link directly to images. 2 million images were taken in June until September 2008 during mostly sunny days. The 2 cars who did this drove 1200 km in and around Stockholm city.
Update: It’s now possible to link directly to images. (thanks Ben)
Street View comes to Russia and UK
Google have received an OK from British courts to launch it’s Street View service in the UK according to The Telegraph. Let’s hope Street View images from the UK are released soon.
And in Russia another service has taken photos on the streets similar to Google. If you understand russian the report and some photos of the car they use is available here. The images will be part of the Russian map service Gdeetotdom.ru. I beleive that russain domain name translates to “Where it is”. Update: I stand corrected. It means “Where is this house” as explained by a visitor in the comments. Thanks.
